Amen, Fervent! We’re looking at downsizing as the kids will soon be on their own, and honestly, I’m looking forward to it! Like you said, less to clean, heat, cool, pay taxes on, etc.

For my early 20’s I wanted to buy a house, since that’s all you see your friends and coworkers doing. “Why throw away rent when you can be building equity.” Luckily I figured out that was bad advice before taking the plunge. I’m happy with relatively small housing. Less utilities, less to clean, and how often do you really have people over? I will be a renter for the foreseeable future. Gives me flexibility in life and my career. And to me, flexibility is king.

Great post. It is so hard to take the emotion out of house buying because the item feels so personal, so these are good things to remember ‘in the moment’.
