- Contact each credit bureau: You will need to contact each of the three credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to report the death and request that the deceased individual’s credit report be flagged with a notice of death. The contact information, in this case, is the same as for freezing credit.
- Provide necessary information: You will need to provide the deceased individual’s full name, Social Security number, and date of birth, as well as a copy of the death certificate. The bureaus may also ask for information about the individual’s creditors and any outstanding debts.
- Follow up: After contacting the credit bureaus, it’s a good idea to follow up to ensure that the notice of death has been added to the individual’s credit report and that their accounts have been closed or flagged appropriately.
